Fillers Q & A

What do fillers treat?

Fillers are FDA-approved for specific uses in people 22 years of age and older and include the following:

  • Moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles
  • Skin folds
  • Restoring facial fat loss
  • Correcting acne scars on the cheeks

Fillers can restore your youthful appearance and take years off your face.

What are fillers best for?

Dermal fillers are gel-like substances injected under the skin and are meant to create a fuller or smoother appearance.

Fillers are best used for increasing the fullness of lips, cheeks, chin, under-eye hollows, jawline, and back of the hand. They are also ideal for correcting moderate to severe facial wrinkles and skin folds.

The FDA also has approved botulinum toxin products such as Botox®, Dysport®, Jeuveau®, and Xeomin® to treat facial wrinkles. These products aren’t fillers. They are injectables that work by keeping muscles from tightening so your wrinkles don’t show as much.

As an alternative to fillers, Dr. Qureshi also offers Botox at Creekside Family Practice.

Are fillers better than Botox?

Neither fillers nor Botox is overall superior to the other. Botox treats the dynamic wrinkles in your upper face, while filler adds volume to skin and scars to smooth them.

Fillers usually last longer, but you can use both of them together to treat wrinkles and blemishes.

How long do fillers last?

Deep injections can last as long as 12 months with fillers, and newer products may last up to two years. The effects of most FDA-approved fillers are temporary because they’re made from materials that the body eventually breaks down and absorbs. Your fillers procedure may have to be repeated to maintain the desired effect*.

The body doesn’t absorb only one FDA-approved dermal filler. This filler is made with polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) beads suspended in a solution that contains cow (bovine) collagen. These beds are tiny, smooth, and round plastic beads.
