Botox or Dermal Fillers? Which Is the Right Choice for You?
Injectable aesthetic treatments like Botox® and dermal fillers can boost your confidence and help you feel your best at any age. If you’re considering one of these options, read on to see what they can do and which one is right for you.

When it comes to wrinkle reduction and restoring a youthful appearance, Botox Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) and dermal fillers are undoubtedly two of the most popular treatments available today. Around 9.5 million procedures using these injectables occur annually in the United States.

Many of our patients here at Creekside Family Practice benefit from Botox and fillers. How do you know which of the two is better for you? Let’s break it down so that you can make an informed decision.

Understanding Botox

Botox is a well-known cosmetic treatment that’s been in use for decades to smooth out wrinkles and fine lines. Botox works by interrupting the messages that nerves send to your facial muscles. This temporarily relaxes the muscles, causing wrinkles and making your skin look smoother and more youthful.

We most commonly use Botox on the upper face, including:

  • Forehead lines
  • Crow’s feet (wrinkles around the eyes)
  • Glabellar lines (frown lines between the eyebrows)

Since Botox relaxes muscles, it is ideal for preventing wrinkles caused by facial expressions like frowning or squinting. The effects usually last about three to four months, after which you’ll likely need another treatment to maintain the results.

Understanding dermal fillers

Unlike Botox, which relaxes muscles, dermal fillers add volume to areas of the face that have lost their natural plumpness over time.

With age, people lose collagen and fat in their faces, which can lead to sagging skin and deep wrinkles. Fillers often contain hyaluronic acid, a substance naturally found in the skin, to help restore this lost volume. We commonly use fillers to:

  • Plump up the lips
  • Fill in nasolabial folds (deep smile lines that reach the nose)
  • Add volume to the cheeks
  • Smooth out marionette lines (lines from the corners of the mouth to the chin)

Depending on which filler we use, results can last anywhere from six months to two years

Choosing the right treatment for you

The best choice between Botox and dermal fillers depends on your specific concerns.

If your goal is to reduce fine lines caused by muscle movement (like forehead wrinkles or crow’s feet), Botox is the better option.

If you want to restore lost volume, smooth out deep wrinkles, or enhance facial features like your lips or cheeks, dermal fillers may be the right choice.

Sometimes, people combine Botox and fillers for a more complete facial rejuvenation known as a liquid facelift. We can help you determine the best approach based on your goals and facial structure.

What to expect during the procedure

Both Botox and filler treatments are nonsurgical and relatively quick. We do them in-office, and they typically take less than 30 minutes. Here’s what you can expect:

Botox

We inject small amounts of Botox into specific facial muscles using a fine needle. The procedure is usually painless, with only minor discomfort. Results begin to appear within a few days and fully develop in about two weeks.

Fillers

We inject the filler under your skin in specific areas to add volume and smooth out wrinkles. Some fillers contain lidocaine (a numbing agent) to reduce discomfort. Results are visible immediately.

After both procedures, you may experience mild swelling or redness, but this usually subsides within a day or two.

Are Botox and fillers safe?

When performed by a qualified professional, Botox and dermal fillers are considered safe. Possible side effects include minor bruising, swelling, or, in rare cases, an allergic reaction. Choosing licensed, experienced providers like ours is essential to reduce the risk of complications.

Botox and dermal fillers offer excellent options for reducing signs of aging and enhancing facial features. The right choice depends on your personal goals and the specific concerns you want to address.
